What the Constitution Means to Me
Director: Katie Chidester
Casting Director: Shinshin Tsai
Executive Artistic Director: Oánh Nguyễn
Heidi Schreck’s timely, hilarious, and deeply felt play breathes new life into our country’s most important document. Fifteen-year-old Heidi paid her college tuition by speaking in (and winning) debate competitions across the country. Now older, she resurrects her teenage self to tell the story of four generations of extraordinary women in her family whose lives were shaped by the Constitution. Nominated for two Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize finalist, Schreck’s boundary-breaking play reimagines our founding document and considers how it will shape the next generation of Americans.

Character Breakdown:
Heidi:
Female, mid 40s to mid 50s
Engaging, dynamic, smart, passionate, and witty. Based on playwright Heidi Schreck; a former debate champion who traveled the country in her teens giving speeches about the Constitution at American Legion halls for prize money. Alternates from adulthood to her awkward and enthusiastic 15 year old self throughout the play. Must be comfortable with direct audience address and engagement. Willing and able to improvise within the confines of the show with audience and Debater.
Must be able to memorize a large line load, the role carries the majority of script text. Emotional heart and driver of play.
Legionnaire:
Male, mid 40s to mid 50s
Heidi’s friend; first appears as an assertive, authoritarian American Legionnaire monitoring the speech and debate, and a stickler for the rules/law. He later turns into Heidi’s ally, champion, and assistant. Initially strict and stoic, the character transforms through the play to be self-reflective, as described within text as having “positive male energy” and “makes [Heidi] feel safe and supported”.
