Artist Profile
Shinshin Yuder Tsai is a dedicated Resident Artist and full-time staff member at Chance Theater, where he serves as Producing Associate. He is also a Board Member-Council for OCTG and the Founding Artistic Director of the AAPI Sketch Comedy Troupe, No MSG Added.
His directing portfolio features a wide range of critically acclaimed productions, including She Kills Monsters at Long Beach Playhouse & STAGEStheatre, The Hatmaker’s Wife, LOVE/SICK, and Cowboy Vs. Samurai at Long Beach Playhouse, as well as The Pillowman and Almost, Maine at the University of California, Irvine. At Chapman University, he has helmed works such as Metamorphoses and Mother Courage and Her Children, and his production of Kvetcher in the Wry was a highlight at OC-Centric. Most recently, Shinshin directed the 2024 OCTG Award Shows at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts.
In addition to directing, Shinshin is also an experienced intimacy director, ensuring that performers feel safe and respected in their work. His intimacy direction credits include Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street at Chance Theater, Unbroken Blossom at East West Players, Vietgone at the University of California, Riverside, and Peter and the Starcatcher at the University of California, Riverside.
Shinshin is also deeply committed to the development of new theatrical works, having collaborated on projects like Boat Show by Dustin H. Chinn, saving all my worries till the day you don’t need me by Nicholas Pilapil, and Shanghai Express by Aj Layague.
Outside of his artistic achievements, he has lovingly curated an extensive list of All-You-Can-Eat restaurants in Southern California—his passion for food rivaling his dedication to the theater arts.
